What Will You Do When A Emergency Happens?

We’ve seen it all before; Natural disasters occur every day leaving people without food, water, or the right supplies to get through comfortably. Many people believe that it won’t happen to them, or it won’t be bad enough to justify preparing ahead of time. I have learned it’s not “if” it will happen but “when” will it happen? Hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornado’s, wildfires, blizzards, etc. These can quickly deplete the supplies carried at any grocery store. It seems like people panic when they know a storm is coming, whether it’s a winter storm or a streak of thunderstorms. They run out to the stores and wipe out all the water and dry goods before anything even happens. In an emergency situation, grocery stores are only going to have a 3 day supply of food items. It is critical you have survival food, water, and the tools to prepare your family when disaster strikes. You don’t need the apocalypse to justify stockpiling survival foods or having the right gear for whatever may come next. Having the right survival food and having the right gear will give you peace of mind knowing you are prepared for any situation. You can get enough supplies for three days or up to years, but at least your ready. Being prepared is having insurance, you never know when you’re going to need it, but it’s nice to have when you do need it. Most all of the survival foods you’ll find on this website will have a shelf life of at least two years, and most will have even more.  Having your family prepared is the best peace of mind you can have. Below is a list of items you should consider having on hand to survive.

Items to consider to be prepared for survival: (in no certain order)

  • High-Calorie Foods – One survival bar can provide thousands of calories, sustaining you for days off that one meal.
  • Long Shelf Life – Most bars generally have a lower shelf life, while freeze-dried foods seem to have the longest shelf life of around 25 years.
  • Seasoning – Make sure you have some salt and a sweetener like sugar or honey. Don’t underestimate that feeling of comfort you get from food. Especially in a survival situation where you might need that comfort the most.
  • Water – A person can live a month without food, but only a few days without water. This fact alone should be motivation to stock up on water. You will need to have a backup plan in case the water supply gets polluted or shut off completely. Most people fail to stock enough water.  You’ll need water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Here are different ways to help: filtering, purifying, sanitizing, or finding reserves.
  • Canned Meats – Opt for high protein meats which contain healthy omega 3’s. Protein is key in every survival situation. Protein keeps you moving, without enough protein, you will become sluggish and weak. No one can afford to be slow and weak in a survival situation; your family is counting on you.
  • Dry Goods/Staples – Include things like pasta, beans, flours, and grains that have a long shelf life and are used to make many other things.
  • Natural Cleaning Supplies – Items like vinegar and baking soda go a long way when it comes to cleaning.
  • Survival Tablets/Vitamins – Not only should you have nutritional supplements in the form of vitamins, but every stockpile should also include Apple Cider Vinegar with “The Mother.” Apple Cider Vinegar contains many antibiotic properties and can be used to treat a variety of medical issues and concerns as well as prevent other conditions. Survival tablets are intended as a food replcement and can provide protein, carbs, vitamins, aminos and more.
  • Backpack Survival Kit -While the vast majority of your survival food stockpile will rest in a designated area, make sure you have a backpack survival kit loaded with staple survival items like food, first aid kits, a fire starter, etc. A backpack is something you will be able to grab quickly and easily if you have to flee from your home.

  • Portable Stove – Many different types of portable stoves range from backpacking stoves to an actual cooktop with multiple burners. Portable stoves can burn different types of fuel, even wood. Choose a portable stove that uses a fuel source you feel comfortable with being able to obtain in a disaster situation.

  • Seeds – This is kind of a worst case scenario item, but if you’re building your survival food stockpile, you may as well add some survival seeds. If the emergency situation is not a short-term disaster, you may need to generate your food source. Survival seeds are a sure win for anyone who wants to prepare for the long haul. There are a variety of survival seeds including fruit, vegetables, herbs, salsa, and medicinal seeds. First, decide what seeds you want to store based on what you and your family like to eat. Second, consider seeds that can be stored and used for bartering. Even though you may not care for some things keep in mind others would, Now you have something to trade during a crisis. Lastly, look at nutritional value, what is something you can get a lot of nutrition out of for little money.
